India's Healing Gift to the World  

Ayurveda, the world's most ancient, yet uniquely futuristic system of healing and good health. The most eco-friendly system of treatment with no harmful side-effects. Ayurveda in its literary sense, is the 'Science of Life' or rather the'science of longevity', and relies completely on herbs and natural substances to heal.

This system for medical treatment and care is believed to have originated in India. Developed at about the same time as Buddhism and Hinduism, this art of healing replaced earlier ideas on disease and healing that were written down in religious texts such as Atharva Veda. Until then, disease was usually explained in terms of possession by various demonic entities. Innumerable references in Vedic literature bear testimony to the extensive practice of Ayurveda as far back as 4000 B.C. Ayurveda soon spread to the neighboring countries of China, Mongolia, Burma, Thailand and Indonesia. Later it spread to Europe, flourishing in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria etc.

Three great personalities behind the early development and growth of Ayurveda are Charaka, Sushrutha and Vagbhata. Ayurveda consists of two parts - Swastha Vritha and Athura Vritha. The former deals with directions for keeping good health, or rather for keeping diseases away, whereas the latter deals with treatment of diseases and disorders. Ayurveda once had a well-developed surgical system (Shalya Chikitsa) behind which was the pioneering effort of Sushrutha. Unfortunately, due to total neglect for a long time, the practice of this surgical system has become extinct today.

Ayurveda tells us of things which maintain life in a state of health and things which cause diseases. It is a complete medical system comprising of eight branches, collectively known as Ashtangas. The eight branches are Kayachkitsa (General Medicine), Balachikitsa (Paediatrics), Grahachikitsa (Occult and Thantric Medicine), Oordhwanga Chilitsa (E.N.T), Salya Chikitsa (Surgery), Damshtra Chikitsa (Toxicology), Jara Chikitsa (Geriatrics) and Vrisha Chikitsa (Aphrodisiac treatment).

Ayurveda is all about how to maintain life in a state of perfect health. And takes a patient in entirety-on physical, mental and spiritual levels-while treating diseases. With advanced researches bringing to light more and more about the influence of mind over body, Ayurveda is fast becoming a holistic alternative to all other system of medicine. Thanks to boundless diagnostic expertise and efficacious pharmacological wealth, Ayurveda offers cure to almost all known diseases.

Ayurveda sees the patient in his totally along with his disease simultaneously. A humoural medical system ayurveda is based on the Thridosha concept. The three doshas are Vatha, Pitha and Kapha. The three doshas exist in man right from his birth. The structure of these doshas continues all through his life. Any imbalance in their structure causes disease. Ayurvedic Physician’s role is to keep them always in equilibrium.

Through routine and seasonal regimens, Ayurveda ensures good health, in spite of the stressful, pressurized life style today. The common health disorders of today are immunity deficiencies, allergic reactions and augmented degenerative changes. Indeed modern medicine has contributed a lot to the science of healing, but a holistic approach is yet to be evolved. Only Ayurveda adopts the holistic remedy to achieve absolute rooting out of the source of any ailment through 'Panchakarma Therapy'. Growing awarness of this effective has caused a sudden spurt in the demand for Ayurveda.
